ahhh... Akumal

A visit to the Yucatan is not complete without exploring Mayan ruins. Tulum is just 20 minutes south of Akumal on Hwy. 307. Perched above the sea, it is impressive to see, a very popular tour site. For a true "Indiana Jones" experience visit Coba, 42 km. west of Tulum. Many buildings are still covered by jungle. Nohoch Mul is the tallest pyramid in the Yucatan peninsula. Muyil is 25 kilometers south of the Pueblo of Tulum. Rarely visited but quite spectacular. A path leads from the ruins through a lush jungle area to Laguna Muyil. Further afield is Ek Balam, under restoration, with impressive plaster carvings. Don't miss Chichen Itza. During the Spring and Fall equinoxes, (March 21 and Sept 21) the setting sun creates shadows down the steps of the pyramid that resemble a snake descending.
